Organist & Choirmaster

Position Summary

 

The Organist/Choirmaster provides musical leadership for the congregation and choir of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Covington, a small town in the southeast of the Atlanta metro area. Good Shepherd is a small parish (average Sunday attendance around 67) but with a strong musical tradition and a core of dedicated singers. Good Shepherd worships in a large Gothic-style church with excellent acoustics and a choir loft.

 

This part-time, at-will position reports directly to the Clergy in charge of the parish and is responsible for planning, rehearsing, and performing music for worship services and parish events.

 

Average expected hours: Service on Sunday is from 10:30 to approximately 11:45. Rehearsal with the choir begins at 9:15. Choir rehearsal during the week can happen at other times, at the OCM’s convenience and availability. Time spent selecting and rehearsing music during the week should be 1.5-2.5 hours, for a weekly total of 4-5 hours.

 

Pay: We pay $250 per week, and $150 for Evensong (once a month) or any extra services. Pay for weddings and funerals is $300.Weekly pay remains the same even when the choir is not in session (June through August.)

 

Major Responsibilities

 

Liturgical Planning and Preparation

• Collaborate with clergy to select hymns, service music, and anthems for worship services

and major liturgical celebrations.

• Rehearse music selections on a weekly basis.

• Schedule and conduct weekly choir rehearsals (midweek and/or Sundays, as determined by the OCM) from September through May.

 

Music Performance and Conducting

• Lead the congregation in music every Sunday, and the choir from September through May.

• Serve as the primary musician for weddings and funerals, with right of first refusal.

 

Administrative Duties

• Maintain regular communication with choir members through email and phone.

• Communicate with clergy about music choices.
