March 31: Boundless Compassion and the Forgiveness Prayer

We will touch on six different paths of meditation/contemplation, from Metta, from the Buddhist tradition, to chanting the Jesus Prayer, to Centering Prayer. Episcopal priest Cynthia Bourgeault calls Centering Prayer  “a receptive prayer of resting in God,” that emphasizes interior silence and prayer as a personal relationship with God and as “a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ.”

All of these prayers are old, and timeless. Centering Prayer has its roots in the contemplative prayer of the Desert Fathers of early Christian monasticism, and in Christian mystical works like The Cloud of Unknowing and the writings of St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross.” Metta and Mindfulness meditations are equally old, coming from the Buddhist tradition from 2500 years ago.

We will meet in the Parish House downstairs parlor on Tuesdays at 5:00 for an hour of meditation instruction. Bring a shawl or blanket, a cushion if you wish, some comfortable and loose clothing, shoes you can remove, and an open heart for finding the silence within. Meditation can reduce stress and anxiety, develop kindness to ourselves and others, develop a calm detachment from our worries, and cultivate empathy and compassion.
