Stations of the Cross

Every Friday in Lent, we walk the way that Jesus walked: the way of the cross. This ancient devotion moves us through the last hours of Jesus' life, from his condemnation to his death on the cross. Carrying the cross, we move from station to station in the church, and at each place we stop and pray the words of Holy Scripture, and we meditate on the event that is commemorated: Jesus' falling under the weight of the cross, Jesus greeting the women of Jerusalem, or Jesus being stripped of his garments. We sing some verses of hymns, and we open our hearts to stillness, to beauty, and to grief. At the end, we arrive at Jesus' crucifixion and burial, and we rest in the quiet that will be filled with the resurrection.

This devotion arose in the medieval era, from the experience of pilgrims to the Holy Land who walked the Via Dolorosa (the Way of Sorrow) in Jerusalem, which retraces Jesus' path from the Praetorium to Golgotha. Millions of pilgrims from all across the world would come to Jerusalem to walk in Jesus' footsteps, but many millions more were unable to make that arduous journey to the Middle East. They too wanted to participate in this meaningful devotion, so medieval churches would make a way of the cross for people to walk -- either outside, or within the church. Just like at the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, there were places for people to stop along the way (or "stations") where they could contemplate specific events on that walk.

If you have never participated in the Stations of the Cross, consider giving it a try this Lent. You can participate at the level that feels comfortable for you: you can stay in your pew and watch, you can join us as we make our way around the church, you can take a turn to read aloud the meditations at a station, or you can just listen in silence.  Come spend time with your Lord as he carries his cross for love of you!
